			I grew up on a small farm in rural South Dakota. I had already decided to trek 725 miles to the southwest when I found out I was pregnant with my son- at eighteen. It might have been easier to stay there, but I was in a quest for high quality education, so I decided I would attend UC Denver anyway; I began my studies here in the fall of 2006. After a roller coaster of a semester, I decided I would go back home to have my son, Sheldon Joh, where I would have adequate support. I didn’t want to give up my role as a student, so I enrolled in a local University. It didn’t take me long to realize I would need to make my journey back to Denver to satisfy my mind, so in August of 2007 I returned to Denver to continue my education where I had started it. My mom came with me, leaving behind her husband of over forty years to make sure I would get all the opportunities she never had. It was a transition for all of us. After two academic years and many trips home, it became apparent that it was time for another transition. My mother needed to go home to care for my father who suffers from diabetes. It seemed like it was going to be nearly impossible, having already been stretched thin financially, I had just learned that there were no funds available for the 2009-10 year for one of the loans I had been receiving to study as an out-of-state student. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that life is not predictable. In August I learned that I had received the Flying Solo Scholarship. It couldn’t have come at a better time. Since the receipt of my scholarship, my mom was able to go back home. I have been able to cut a few hours at work so that I can spend more time with my son. I am able to take a slightly heavier course load to put myself in a better circumstance for timely graduation in May of 2011. Finally, I have been able to become more involved at school through extracurricular activities including volunteer work. My ultimate goal is to attend graduate school to work in the healthcare field. Due in part to the financial support that I have received from the T & R Fund Flying Solo Scholarship, I am able to put myself one step closer to that goal.

			I am a 21 year old junior at UCCS. I was recently accepted into the Teaching Education Program. I will begin my professional year this fall, and graduate in May 2011. I plan on teaching first or second grade. This scholarship has helped lower my stress my level by paying for school and helping pay for my son's daycare tuition bill. Not only does this scholarship help me, but my son also benefits a great deal from the scholarship. It is because of this scholarship that I am able to continue my education at UCCS, and make a better life for my son, and myself.

			Hello, my name is Jessica Walters and I am a recipient of the Flying Solo Scholarship 2009-2010. I would like to thank all of those who have contributed to the process and funding of the scholarship. Being a recipient of the scholarship has benefited me and my family in several ways. The education gained at the University of Colorado at Denver is impeccable and priceless; however, the education comes at great cost. I feel extremely blessed to have the financial support given to me through this scholarship. The funding has helped purchase books, supplies, school fees, and paid for my classes. However, and more importantly, the funding has given me a chance to break the cycle of poverty and change my life for myself and my children. The opportunity that the scholarship is allowing me to accomplish is greater then the purchase of any material thing. Thank you again for all the support.

			Hello, my name is David Jorgens. I am a Junior at the UCCS business school with a focus on finance and accounting. I am a single parent of a beautiful 5 year old named Isabella. We are both work very hard at staying as busy and active as possible. My goal is to graduate from UCCS in May of 2013. I plan on going into corporate benefits and helping companies set up their retirement plans etc. The T&R Flying Solo Scholarship has helped me stay focused on the many tasks of being a single parent in school full time and eased the burden of creating a stable environment for my daughter. I don't know how I could have been as successful in school or made it this far without the help from the T&R Flying Solo Scholarship!! Thank you!!

			My name is Nicole Wilder. I am a single mother of three children, Aaron (age 12), Noah (age 11) and Avery (age 9). I am a graduate student at UCCS perusing my concurrent BS MS degree in Mechanical Engineering. My goal is to successfully be a mother and succeed in achieving my degrees in Spring 2014. I hope to be the example to all single parents that need encouragement to stand on their own and become self sufficient for their family. If I can do it, it can be done.
